The Alienware m17 laptop is the most recent and latest in Alienware’s m-series line of laptops that are ultrabooks (in laptop parlance) but come with a lot of power and features along with a price that starts at nearly $1500. Their latest lineup of m-series laptops have significant upgrades compared to the last version.
The specs for the Alienware m17 are quite high end with a Core i7-8750H 2.6GHz processor, 16GB of memory, a 128GB solid state drive, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card and a 3TB HDD. The m17 comes with the option of adding a second SSD if you want. It weighs 5.79lbs and is 23mm thin.
Design-wise it’s an evolution of Alienware’s m14 series laptop. Despite the high-end specs, it still seems like a premium laptop with a premium build and features that go beyond the conventional ultrabook laptop. It’s a bit larger than you’d expect from a notebook but has a high-quality build that keeps the weight and overall quality on par with a MacBook. It looks like a nicer fit in the hand than the other two PC laptop offerings I’ve reviewed recently: the Dell XPS 13 or MacBook Air.
Connectivity wise, it has three USB 3 Type A ports and one Thunderbolt 3 port. A Mini-Display port, Ethernet, a memory card reader and an HDMI port are also present. You’ll also find the touchpad, a port for the proprietary charging cable and the headphone jack port. Overall, it’s a fairly standard configuration for such a powerful and large laptop. The m17 also has a battery that is removable.
In my opinion, the m17 has some pretty redeeming factors. Its large footprint and long battery life are great for productivity. The larger display also makes the laptop less portable than its smaller siblings, but it’s still easy to carry around and more efficient for working in all sorts of scenarios. It looks good, too. I also liked the keyboard, although it’s not for everyone. My greatest complaints are to do with the lack of a second USB-C port, and its hefty price, which makes it hard to recommend for most users.
Nevertheless, if you’re a fan of Alienware, the m17 is definitely worth a look. It has a big display, a nice keyboard, and a number of storage options. It is a little more expensive than most notebooks on the market, but I think you’ll like it. Some buyers may want the m17 for its looks, but if you’re comparing the raw features to other laptops in its same category, the m17 may be the best choice.
That being said, if you want a big-screen, powerful notebook with good battery life, I think most people will prefer the 15-inch version of the m15. Only a small percentage of users need the 17” screen that the m17 provides. Plus, the 15-inch m15 is also cheaper and easier to carry.
